Why You Should See a Dentist if You're Experiencing Tooth Pain

Posted on

It's not uncommon to experience tooth pain, but it's not something that shouldn't be taken seriously, either. Even though many people do suffer from tooth pain, there is typically a reason for it, so you should address that reason as soon as possible. If you can, you should call your dentist and schedule an appointment to see them as soon as possible. These are some of the reasons why this is what you should probably do.

They Should Be Able to Figure Out the Source of the Problem

You shouldn't have to go to a specialist to at least find out what is causing your tooth pain. A general dentist or family dentist should be able to assess the problem. Let them know where in your mouth you are experiencing pain, and try to describe the type and severity of pain as well, if possible. The dentist might inspect your mouth with their handheld tools and might even take a few X-rays so they can figure out the location and cause of the issue.

You Should Be Able to Be Seen Quickly

One reason why you might not have called your dentist about your tooth pain yet could be because you're afraid that you will not be seen right away. Instead, you might fear that it will be weeks or months before you're able to have an appointment. However, this might not be the case. If you let the receptionist or appointment scheduler know that you are suffering from pain when you call and schedule your appointment, they might try to get you into the office as quickly as possible.

They Might Be Able to Save Your Tooth

In some cases, tooth pain is related to decay or other similar issues. When these issues are ignored, you can count on your pain to get worse and worse over time. However, if you catch these types of issues early and have them professionally treated — such as with a filling, root canal, or crown — then you can often save the tooth. Since you probably don't want to lose any of your teeth if unnecessary, this is a very good reason to consider seeking help with your tooth pain.

They Can Help You Get Rid of Pain

Of course, perhaps the most important reason to consider seeing a dentist when you're experiencing tooth pain is because it can potentially help you get rid of the pain. Not only can your dentist address the dental issue that is causing you pain, but they can also potentially prescribe a pain medication of some sort to help you get some relief.
